Whether an AI engine can cite you comes down to a chain of conditions, and the first links are mechanical. Can the crawler reach the page? Is there a map telling it which pages matter? Have you stated a policy, or are you relying on defaults you have never read?
Those three questions are answerable in seconds and they gate everything downstream. There is no point optimising passage structure on a site that returns Disallow: / to every AI user-agent, and it happens more often than you would think — usually because someone blocked GPTBot to decline training and took the citation crawlers down with it.
