Does AI Cite Your Own Site or Third Parties?

AI answers to buyer questions mostly link to third parties. In our sample, 17% of cited links went to the vendors in that category, and the rest went to review sites, publishers, forums and other companies. ChatGPT was the exception, at 42%.

How the links split, by AI

We counted every site linked in 869 answers to neutral buyer questions, then checked whether each one belonged to a brand we track in that category. A question like "which CRM is best value?" gives a vendor every reason to want the citation, so this is close to a best case for vendors' own sites.

Gemini12541089%
Google AI Mode3463610%

Perplexity15201349%

We track only a set of leading brands in each category, so some links counted as third-party will belong to other vendors. Treat the figures as a guide to the pattern, not an exact share.

Being named isn't the same as being cited

The brand named most often in each of our categories appeared in 92% of answers on average, but its own site was cited in only 27%. HubSpot, for example, was named in 30 of 30 CRM answers, and hubspot.com was cited in 10. What others say about you can get you into the answer without your site being the source.

What to do with this

  1. Work out which AI matters for your buyers. If ChatGPT dominates, your own pages have more direct leverage than if it's Perplexity or Gemini.
  2. Keep your own facts clear and easy to reach. Pricing, features and comparison pages are what an answer needs when it does go to your site.
  3. Put PR effort where citations already go. Our list of the most-cited sites by AI and the category leaderboards are a practical starting list.
  4. Measure both results separately. Track named and cited as two numbers, because they respond to different work.

What this doesn't show

This is a dated sample of software and online service questions, in English, for an audience in the United States. It shows which sites answers link to, not why, and other topics such as news or health will look different.

Common questions

Should I invest in PR or my own blog for AI visibility?

Both, but look at where your buyers ask. In our sample, only ChatGPT linked heavily to vendors' own sites. The other four AI sources we measured sent most of their links to third parties, so a plan that relies only on your own blog leaves most answers untouched.

Can a brand be recommended without its site being cited?

Yes, and it is common. Being named in the answer's text and being linked as a source are separate results, and leading brands in our data were named far more often than their own sites were cited.

How do AI assistants decide which sources to use?

Their providers don't publish the full method, so nobody outside can say exactly. What we can measure is the result: which kinds of site each one links to for a given kind of question.
