How to Rank in Google AI Mode: What 174 Answers Show

There is no AI Mode setting to turn on. Google says there are no additional requirements to appear: a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet. The harder question is whose pages it chooses, so we counted them. In 174 answers to software buying questions, the sites Google AI Mode linked to most often were reddit.com, youtube.com and gartner.com.

What Google says you need

  • Be indexed. The page must be in Google's index and meet the usual Search technical requirements.
  • Be eligible for a snippet. A page blocked from showing a snippet can't be a supporting link.
  • Nothing else. Google says there are no additional requirements, and that meeting these doesn't guarantee your page will be crawled, indexed or used.

So "ranking in AI Mode" isn't a position you can hold. It means being one of the pages the answer chooses to link to, for a particular question, on a particular run.

We asked five AI sources the same neutral buying questions in 29 software and online service categories, then counted the links. AI Mode stands out in two ways: it gave far fewer links, and it leaned on different sites.

AI sourceLinks per answerMost-cited sites (answers citing each)Links to the vendors we track
ChatGPT8.7g2.com (41), zoho.com (40), microsoft.com (35)42%
Gemini7.2pcmag.com (58), zapier.com (39), g2.com (32)9%

Claude6.7guideflow.com (33), techradar.com (31), zapier.com (24)7%
Perplexity8.7g2.com (78), forbes.com (72), toolradar.com (69)9%

With about 2.0 links per answer, there are few places to win. In this sample, reddit.com appeared in 30 of 174 answers and youtube.com in 29, and only 10% of links went to the vendors we track. The full picture across all five is in which websites AI cites most.

What to do, in order

  1. Confirm Google can use the page. Check it with URL Inspection in Search Console. Then look for nosnippet or a low max-snippet, and make sure robots.txt doesn't block Googlebot.
  2. Answer the follow-up questions too. Google says AI Mode may use a "query fan-out" technique, running related searches across subtopics. A buyer's page that also covers price, setup and who it suits gives it more to draw on.
  3. Earn a place on the sites it already links to. For software, that means sites such as reddit.com, youtube.com, gartner.com, pcmag.com and zapier.com. The best fit varies by market, and each category leaderboard lists the sites cited most there.
  4. Take video seriously. youtube.com was cited in 29 of these answers, so a clear demo or comparison video may be cited when your own page isn't.
  5. Measure the same questions repeatedly. One answer proves little, because answers vary from run to run. Keep a fixed set of buyer questions and check them on a schedule, by hand or with an AI visibility tool.

What this data doesn't show

This is one sample, taken on one day, in English, for an audience in the United States, and only for software and online services. Links per answer are what we could read from each answer, so treat the gap as a direction, not an exact figure. A link also doesn't prove a page shaped the answer. The steps above are our reading of this data, not advice from Google.

Common questions

Do I need special markup to appear in Google AI Mode?

No. Google says there are no additional requirements or special optimizations, and that the usual SEO best practices still apply. A page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and even then Google doesn't guarantee it will be used.

Is Google AI Mode the same as Gemini?

No. AI Mode is a feature of Google Search, and in our sample the two linked to different sites. AI Mode most often linked to reddit.com, youtube.com and gartner.com, while Gemini most often linked to pcmag.com, zapier.com and g2.com.

Does blocking Google-Extended remove me from AI Mode?

Google says robots.txt rules for Googlebot are how you control crawling for Search, and it describes Google-Extended as being for AI training and grounding in some of its other systems. To limit what appears from your pages in Search, it points to nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex.

How do I see my AI Mode traffic?

Google includes AI Mode in the overall search traffic in Search Console, in the Performance report under the Web search type.

How many links does an AI Mode answer include?

In our sample, about 2.0 per answer, against 6.7 to 8.7 for the other four AI sources we measured. That is what we could read from each answer in software buying questions, so other topics may differ.
